Revered since ancient times in India as an Ayurvedic nervine tonic, it has been recently recognized in western medicine as a promising endocrine adaptogen, or stress reducer. Also, according to the National Institute of Health it shows effectiveness as an anti-tumor, neuroregenerative, and anti-arthritic in initial studies.

The plant is a woody shrub which can adapt to a variety of conditions but thrives in full sun and prefers heat. In cooler, shadier conditions, the plant tends to grow leggy and can succumb to pests. Once established, the plant is drought tolerant and will grow to about 2 feet high by 3 feet wide. The roots contain the highest concentration of active ingredients and will be ready to harvest after the first year of growth.
