This California Native is valued for its lush appearance, attractive foliage, and dainty purple flowers which resemble small pitchers. Although not a true sage, it is a relative which shares many of sage’s attributes including a pleasant aroma that is similar to Hummingbird Sage (Salvia spathacea). Although very similar to the more common Lepechinia calycina, L. fragrans is often preferred for its softer appearance and colorful flowers. 


Growth Form: 3-5 Feet Tall and wide, lance or heart shaped velvet textured leaves.
Light: Can grow in Full sun, but is more often found in the understory of oak woodlands where it receives dappled sunlight.
Water: appreciates regular watering during its active growing season but can tolerate short periods of drought once established.
Soil: can grow in various soil types, including sandy or loamy soil.
Hardiness: USDA zones 8 to 10. In Sunset zones, it is typically recommended for zones 8, 9, 14-24.
