Puyas are found throughout South America, and occupy the same ecological niche as the North American agave and yucca, or the African aloe. Being a member of the Bromeliad family, this plant has all the floral color of its tropical relatives with none of their water or climate needs. Many of the flowers of this genera are described as “Alien” or “unearthly'' for their metallic appearance, and are often thought to be fake at first glance. Along with their striking appearance, the flowers host a variety of pollinators including bees and hummingbirds.
This plant is an excellent addition to a drought tolerant garden and can easily weather extremes that many other plants cannot including extreme cold.
This unique variety of p. Coerulea features particularly dark purple flowers, sometimes almost black, highlighted by bright yellow stamens and a green pistil. A winter bloomer. It is a Chilean species and can be found both at medium altitudes below the timeline and interior valleys making it tolerant of both hot summer temperatures and cold winter temperatures.
