Wormwood is an herb with a rich history, dating back to ancient Greek times. During this period, the plant was mixed with wine and drunk after meals to aid digestion.

In Greek mythology, wormwood was believed to have been given to humans by the Goddess Artemis, after whom the genus Artemisia is named. It was considered a sacred herb with protective and healing properties.

More recently, wormwood is best known for its use in the alcoholic drink absinthe, made popular by revolutionary thinkers and artists such as Van Gogh. The drink also gained a negative reputation due to adverse effects, though these were due to the production of counterfeit absinthe, which was colored green by copper, now known to be a toxic substance.
