Known for Having the largest flowers of any species native to California, This poppy is found in areas spanning from Southern California to Baja California. It grows in dry canyon chaparral and coastal sage scrub plant communities, sometimes in areas recently burned. .It is a popular ornamental plant which may exceed six feet in height. Its woody stems grow from a network of rhizomes which can be divided and replanted when the plant matures.
