Holy Basil-Tulsi Ocimum-sanctum

In Hinduism, tulsi is considered the most holy of all plants, an earthly manifestation of the goddess Lakshmi. Tulsi is so important in Hindusim that according to Frederick J. Simoons’ book, “Plants of Life, Plants of Death”, during the 19th century on the census conducted by the British Raj in the North-Western Provinces, (now Uttar Pradesh in Northern India), the majority of the population declined being identified as Hindu, Sikh, or Muslim, but self-identified as Tulsi-worshippers.

There are three basil herbs referred to in India as tulsi, or “holy basil”. Rama Tulsi, Krishna Tulsi, and Vana Tulsi. Both Rama Tulsi and Krishna Tulsi are annual varieties while Vana Tulsi is a hardier Perennial variety.
